CODE: Journal of Translation Vol. V

The torchbearer of knowledge illustration (back cover. Torch Bearer. c. 1937) translates into the flag bearer of gender equality and inclusivity, and the books held in the former’s hand morph into feminist literature stacked within reach of a woman who represents each and every student that constitutes this institution, relentless in the pursuit of knowledge. And most importantly, the stern, upright posture of the lady is relaxed, in command of her space; she is both at ease and acutely aware of her identity – existing as is, for women are allowed to be at ease now.
Reminiscing Indraprastha
1937-1950
CODE is the Student Journal of Translation of Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi. I illustrated and designed Volume V, which was published in September 2019.
With the progression of time, not only words but images demand a renewal – a translation into a language of contemporary resonance.

INSIDE CODE
This edition was particularly tricky as it was going to be printed in black and white rather than colour, and thus the contrast between the illuminated cover and the plain divider illustrations inside had to be balanced somehow. Thus, where the line drawings lacked in colour, they made up for in an almost ornamental, intricate style.
